Being cooped up for nearly 4 months with the entire COVID thing and getting very bored, Mel started making videos; mostly music videos.  But as the wheels turned in the little bit of Gray Matter that Mel has, he decided there was a plethora of COVID material to relaunch Mel/Pee Wee.  After about 4 weeks of storyboards, prop construction, shooting, and editing, Pee Wee’s COVID Playhouse launched.  Yes, COVID is serious business, but there is usually humor in some of the most serious matters.

JAMBI for PeeWee

Mel has a little bit of history with Pee Wee.  First, he was one of those adults who used to watch Pee Wee’s Playhouse religiously on Saturday mornings over 30 years ago.  For those that are not familiar, Pee Wee’s Playhouse was as much an adult show as a kids show, just like The Simpsons and Family Guy shows of today.  When Mel got married on a cruise ship in the port of Miami in 1996, there was a talent show in which passengers could participate.  On a dare, Mel/Pee Wee – Pee Wee/Mel was born.

The poor Master of Ceremonies for the event (an English chap from Britain) didn’t know what to make of Mel/Pee Wee.  But he graciously rolled with the punches, ‘cuz the audience knew EXACTLY what was going on.  As did the band director, when he busted out his musicians with a flawless rendition of TEQUILA.  However, this was both the birth AND retirement of Mel/PeeWee for 20 years.

Mel/Pee Wee did not reappear until a Halloween party here in The Villages, FL in 2017.  Mel had a gig with a local dance band, and everyone was required to wear a costume.  So - - Mel/Pee Wee rose from the ash heap and onto the dance floor for the Latino Club of The Villages Halloween festivities, and the rest as they say, is history . . .

He takes a lot of heat for it, but Mel was also a Captain & Tennille fan in his early teens.  What young adolescents wouldn’t be?  “C’mon, we all can agree that Tennille was hot!  And Daryl Dragon was an incredible songwriter, keyboardist, and producer.”  On a whim, Mel decided he had to honor the duo (after all, Toni is now a neighbor, living in Central Florida).  He wanted to keep it light, fun, and just a bit tongue-in-cheek.  Hopefully, he succeeded with this rendition . . .

As a piano player, Mel has two major influences from the 80’s and 90’s, namely Billy Joel and Elton John.  The two piano men have sold almost 500,000,000 albums between the two of them.  Mel saw the pair in concert on their 2001 FACE TO FACE tour in Minneapolis.   YOU MAY BE RIGHT is a song that he has performed for over 25 years.  “I don’t know why, but it’s a song that I’ve never grown tired of.”  Again, in classic Mel fashion, he performed the vocals, played piano, and laid down the sax track with his keyboard.  Here too Mel Directed, created all the graphics, produced the final audio mix, and assisted in the video editing.

Mel has always been an Elvis Presley fan, but he discovered the King’s multi-faceted talents and universal appeal while filling the Music Director shoes and performing with Elvis tribute artist Art Kistler back in his home state of Minnesota in 2014.  JUST PRETEND is an Elvis country song that is not widely known, but it hit home with Mel and he decided to let it all hang out there in a raw, unplugged version with just him and his grand piano at the house.  No editing, no mixing, no special effects.  Just Mel and the Young Chang grand piano.   “ . . . to date, it’s one of the more difficult recordings I’ve made.”

Mel enjoys several genres of music and many of the great musicians and performers in these genres.  Charlie Daniels was one of those performers.  Mel recalls jamming to the CDB back in the early 80’s with his brother, a strolling violinist/fiddle player for the last 45+ years.  When Charlie passed in July of this year, Mel just had to honor him with this video.  He sang all the vocals, directed, and produced the graphics and final audio mix.

Cubicle King - Tush Test - Lady Lake Camber of Commerce.

Cubicles Plus (CPOF), a local office furniture company, wanted to promote their ergonomic chairs. They had an opportunity to participate at the Lady Lake Farmers Market in front of the Lady Lake Chamber Office (aka The Log Cabin).  CPOF wanted to educate the public about “good” and “better” task seating.  Mel brought ”The Cubicle King” to life and applied his E❸ concept (Entertain, Engage, and Educate) to bring this messaging to the public and demonstrate CPOF’s ergonomic task chairs. This was all done with no written script and no rehearsals.

Corporate Party Testimonial

As an active member of several business networking groups, Mel was approached to host a holiday party.  It was a new concept; put on one event with multiple network groups participating, creating more synergy at the venue and exposing individuals to other networking opportunities and cross-marketing opportunities in a fun and non-threatening environment.  Mel created a custom PowerPoint presentation, incorporating the branding of all four networking groups, and gave a fun presentation on the “DOs and DON’Ts” of networking.  Principals applied: E❸

After the successful debut of “The Cubicle King” at the Farmer’s Market, Cubicles Plus (CPOF) decided to produce an informational video on filing tips for the workplace.  Mel developed the script and produced the video per the objectives of CPOF, demonstrating significant filing cost savings while having a little fun at the same time.  More E❸ concepts.
